(First of a series on finding, hiring and working with writing services for your business)
Writing services to help create great content for online marketing such as blogs, ebooks, white papers and social media have never been in greater demand.
Ninety percent of organizations are now marketing with content, because it is such an effective strategy. Marketers are spending over a quarter of their budget on content marketing, and that number is growing every year. A whopping 62 percent of those using content marketing outsource their content marketing. That’s a lot of demand for writing services!
So if you are one of those 90 percent of businesses using content marketing, congratulations! As you probably know, it’s not enough to have content — you need exceptional content to get results. And you need exceptional content on a consistent basis to really move the needle. But where can you find writing services to help you meet your needs?
Where to find writing services
Here are some some sources that you should consider:
1) If your budget is limited, hire college students majoring in journalism to work for you part-time. Students who have had a few journalism classes understand how to write in the inverted pyramid style with the most important information at the top of the story or article, and to use a clear, organized writing style. Get writing samples from applicants and be prepared to edit their work, but most students will work for relatively little because they need the credential on their resume. You may even be able to offer unpaid internships in exchange for the students obtaining college credit. Be prepared to spend time working with students in exchange for this “free” labor.
2) If your budget is greater, hire former newspaper reporters and editors. With the paradigm shift in the newspaper industry and the massive layoffs in the newsroom, there are numerous journalists looking for work. You should be able to find journalists looking for freelance work without much difficulty. LinkedIn is a good place to find them. As I mentioned above, journalists are highly trained to write in a style and format that works especially well for business applications. They also know how to do research on new subjects, and they can write quickly and on deadline.
3) Another source of writing services is online sites where freelancers and businesses meet up. A few examples of those are: Writer Access, The Content Authority, Copypress and Textbroker. These sites work a variety of ways, but the standard way is that you pay according to the number of words you want written and the quality of writer you desire. One of the frustrations is that it is difficult to form a relationship with a writer if you find one that you like. You don’t talk to the writer, but rather communicate by email, and usually not by name.
4) If you find it valuable to form a long-term relationship with a writer who learns about your business and your writing style preferences, then you will want to find a firm that specializes in providing writing services. A marketing firm such as The Buzz Factoree that specializes in content creation for inbound marketing will get to know your business and produce content that helps you meet your strategic objectives.
Businesses today are depending on writing services more and more to produce content that will drive leads to their websites. To get the best results, invest in the best quality content that you can afford.
